Description from the seller

Authentic Thermometer: BYRHH

Antique glass-style advertising thermometer for the BYRHH alcohol brand, circa 1950

The thermometer works

Manufacturing: France-Thermomètre – R. Plas Paris-Uzerche.

Byrrh was born in Thuir, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, around 1866, thanks to the brothers Simon and Pallade Violet, originally itinerant merchants. They created an aperitif based on wine, herbs and quinquina, initially presented as a “tonic wine.”

In 1873, the BYRRH brand was registered. The success was rapid and the brothers developed gigantic cellars in Thuir. At the beginning of the 20th century, Byrrh became one of the great French aperitifs and was exported abroad.

Its golden age arrived in the 1930s, with advertising very present in cafes and at stations. The Thuir cellars notably house a wooden vat of about one million liters, built in 1951.
