Description from the seller
Marquetry guéridon with removable top – 19th century
Magnificent coffee table/antique guéridon, probably of French origin, dating from the second half of the 19th century, around 1860–1890.
This elegant table stands out for its substantial cabinetmaking and marquetry work.
It rests on a superb central turned baluster shaft, richly decorated with fillets and inlays of contrasting woods.
The pedestals terminate in four curved feet in a volute, themselves adorned with marqueted motifs.
The large rectangular top with beveled edges is removable.
It features at its center a remarkable geometric star marquetry evoking a compass rose, surrounded by a contrasting wooden surround.
Construction appears mainly of solid wood and veneer, presumably with walnut as the predominant wood, combined with lighter and darker essences used to create the marquetry decorations.
The beautiful figuring, natural tones and warm patina give the whole piece a great deal of character.
