One copper-engraved view by Friedrich Bernhard Werner (1690–1776), titled RADICOFANI, depicting the town and the famous Radicofani Fortress in Toscana near Siena, Italy, non-coloured, 205 × 295 mm, with a bird’s-eye perspective and bilingual Latin and German captions, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Splendid and rare copper engraving (etching) from the 18th century, depicting a suggestive and expansive bird's-eye view of the hamlet and the famous Fortezza di Radicofani, located in the province of Siena, along the historical route of the Via Francigena.
The work stands out for its very high level of topographic detail and the liveliness of the genre scenes in the foreground, which show wayfarers, horsemen, and peasants at work on the Tuscan hills. The view is enriched by elegant Baroque cartouches supported by winged putti, containing a numbered explanatory legend and bilingual descriptive texts (Latin and German).
In generally good condition considering its age. Sharp impression and well-inked. Laid contemporaneous paper with original thickness."
