17th‑century copper engraving by Caspar Merian (1627–1686) titled "Görtz in Friaul" (Gorizia), Italy, from Topographia Provinciarum Austriacarum, depicting the fortified hill, castle, walls and town of Gorizia in Friuli.
Description from the seller
Fascinating and rare original 17th-century copper engraving depicting the historic view of the city and castle of Gorizia (indicated in the title in old German as "Görtz in Friaul"). The work shows in the foreground the fortified hill with the castle, the ancient city walls descending along the slope and the town below enriched with details of trees, paths and a carriage in motion.
The work is signed in the plate in the lower left corner “Casp. Merian fecit” and is taken from the famous geographical work Topographia Provinciarum Austriacarum, printed in Frankfurt.
• Good for the period. Sharp impression and well inked.
• Paper: Original margins present. Slight and natural yellowing of the sheet due to time, which gives the classic antique charm.
