Cavalier OGBONI / YORUBA - Sculpture - Nigeria

Description:

Stylized rider figure representing an important mounted person, often sculpted in bronze or brass according to Yoruba tradition.

The figure generally bears attributes of power (conical headdress, weapons or a ritual staff) and adopts a hieratic posture.

The horse, a symbol of prestige, is rendered in a compact and geometric style, typical of African foundries using the lost-wax casting technique.
