A Renaissance copper engraving titled 'Brixia Tyrolis' by Braun & Hogenberg, printed in Italy for the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, showing a bird's-eye view of Bressanone on non-coloured period paper, 24 × 53 cm, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Splendid and historically significant Renaissance panoramic view of the town of Bressanone (South Tyrol), titled "Brixia Tyrolis" in the heraldic cartouche at the upper right. The work is drawn from the famed fourth volume of the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," the most important atlas of cities ever published, edited by Georg Braun and engraved by Frans Hogenberg in Cologne starting in 1588.
The copper engraving shows a detailed bird's-eye view of the episcopal city, with its fortifications, the cathedral, and the topography of the surrounding river valley. In the foreground are finely depicted figures in traditional period costumes and scenes of rural life. An exemplary impression on contemporary paper, with evident and genuine editorial folds.
