According to Indian mythology, rubies were formed from the blood spurts of the demon Vala. In ancient India, the ruby protected its wearer from harm and safeguarded their mental and physical health. Another belief was that if one offered a beautiful ruby to the god Krishna, one would be reborn as a ruler.
The chromium contained in rubies causes natural fluorescence, excited by both visible and invisible (ultraviolet) light. Fluorescence can make a ruby’s color even more intense and thus increase its value.
