About François Pompon
François Pompon (1855-1933) is one of the leading French figures of modern animal sculpture.
After working with, among others, Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel, he gradually develops a very personal language, based on the purification of volumes, the softness of curves and the removal of superfluous details.
From the early 20th century, Pompon devoted himself mainly to animal representation. He observed animals at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and seeks less to reproduce their anatomy in minute details than to capture their movement, their silhouette and their essence.
His consecration comes at the Salon d’Automne of 1922, where his monumental White Bear met with immense success. This work has become one of the most iconic animal sculptures of the 20th century and one of the masterpieces in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay.
With its smooth surfaces and its powerful yet simplified forms, Pompon’s work occupies a special place in the history of modern sculpture, between Rodin’s tradition and Brancusi’s more radical explorations.
