Description from the seller

This is an authentic, vintage creative Kokeshi doll (sōsaku kokeshi), titled Donko or Yūyake (Dusk).
The doll is handmade and painted by the legendary and highly awarded Japanese kokeshi master Hideo Ishihara.

This kokeshi doll is called "Donko kokeshi," which is a relatively newly invented style of kokeshi dolls in the 20th century.

The kimono of this doll honors the setting sun, seen through a bamboo forest. Bamboo is a very strong, sturdy plant and in Japan it symbolizes prosperity. The doll honors both the bamboo and the vermilion-colored sun of Japan. The aesthetics of the doll would depict an individual walking through a vast bamboo forest, almost otherworldly, or as if in a dream. According to the artist, this poem would form the basis for this creation: "the bamboo dances in the wind — against the red Japanese sunset — the birth of a new beginning."

Her face exudes purity and innocence. The body of her kimono is decorated with artistically designed bamboo stalks. On the head sits a unique 'magician' (wizard), which highlights the traditional hairstyle with a fringe.
