Description from the seller
DMR Paris (Demaria) – Antique photographic device / French photographic accessory – Patented S.G.D.G. – ca. 1890–1910
Description
Rare vintage photographic apparatus or technical accessory of French manufacture, marked “D.M.R. PARIS” and “BREVETÉ S.G.D.G.”, traceable to the historic Paris production D.M.R., acronym associated with the origins of the Demaria house, subsequently known as Demaria et Fils, Demaria Frères and, after the union with Lapierre, Demaria-Lapierre.
The Demaria manufactory was active in Paris in the production of photographic apparatus, cameras, optical accessories and projection equipment between the late 19th and early 20th century.
On the metal body there are clearly visible raised markings:
“D.M.R. – PARIS”
and
“BREVETÉ S.G.D.G.”
The latter is the abbreviation of “Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement”, a form used in France to indicate a product covered by a patent under the French system of the era.
There is also an additional marking that appears legible as “AUER” (to be considered as a cautious attribution), probably referring to a component or a technical system of the device.
Era
The object is indicatively attributable to the late 19th – early 20th century period, about 1890–1910, based on construction type, markings and the history of the D.M.R./Demaria manufacture.
Conditions
The item presents itself in original, unrepaired condition, with evident and widespread signs of time.
The metal surfaces show oxidation, rust, patina, discoloration and signs of use, clearly visible in the photographs. The brass parts likewise show patina and signs compatible with age.
Functionality has not been tested and the item is therefore offered as untested. No guarantee is given for the completeness of all originally provided components.
No polishing or restoration work has been carried out, to preserve its historical patina.
Collecting interest
Interesting testament to French photography and optical-photographic technology from the 19th to the 20th century, particularly of interest to collectors of:
- antique cameras, plate cameras, optical instruments, projection equipment, French scientific technology and historic photographic material.
The presence of the D.M.R. Paris and Breveté S.G.D.G. markings constitutes an important identifying and historical element.
Note on attribution
Provenance from the D.M.R./Demaria Paris production is supported by the marking present on the object. The exact model and the specific function of the apparatus have not been identified with certainty, therefore deliberate attributions or model names not documented are avoided.
