Antique handcrafted wood fretwork cross with shelf

This delicate, hand-finished Bavarian home altar with a detailed Jesus on the cross statue is a classic example of religious folk art from the 19th and/or early 20th century. The delicate scrollwork, the patient craftsmanship, which is characteristic of tramp art or specialized woodcarving, were common in rural, colonial European areas.

This beautiful handmade home altar originates from Bavaria (circa 1890–1900) and was given by a mistress to a maid in gratitude for faithful, devoted service.
