Abydos was an important Greek city of the Troad, strategically situated on the Asian shore of the Hellespont. Its position opposite Sestos gave it control over one of antiquity’s most vital maritime crossings between the Aegean and Black Sea. Abydos prospered through trade and tolls and played a prominent role in Persian, Greek and later Hellenistic conflicts, remaining a key gateway between Europe and Asia.
