Marathos was an important Phoenician city on the Syrian coast, opposite the island city of Arados. Long connected politically and economically with Arados, it developed greater autonomy during the Hellenistic period and issued its own coinage. Its fertile coastal territory and position on Mediterranean routes supported prosperity, while rivalry with Arados eventually led to conflict and the city’s decline.
