Description from the seller
Illyria, Dyrrhachion.
Ca. 250-50 BC.
Drachm (Silver, 19 mm, 3.25 g).
Obv: Magistrate’s name in Greek above cow standing right, head turned back towards suckling calf standing left beneath; varying control symbols in the fields.
Rev: ΔΥΡ, abbreviated ethnic of Dyrrhachion, and second magistrate’s name in Greek around a double stellate pattern within a double linear square; additional control symbols on some issues.
Reference: Hoover, Handbook of Coins of Macedon and Its Neighbors, Volume 3, Part 1: Macedon, Illyria, and Epeiros, type 40.
Dyrrhachion, modern Durrës in Albania, was founded as Epidamnos by Greek settlers from Corcyra and Corinth. Its Adriatic harbour linked Italy with the Illyrian interior. Under Roman influence, it became a major gateway to the Balkans and a starting point of the Via Egnatia. Its abundant silver drachms retained the traditional cow-and-calf design, with magistrates’ names and symbols distinguishing individual issues.
