Reference: Hoover, Handbook of Syrian Coins, Royal and Civic Issues, type 1043.
Antiochos VI Dionysos, son of Alexander Balas, was proclaimed king as a child by the general Diodotos Tryphon during the struggle against Demetrios II. Although he held the royal title, power rested with Tryphon, who later assumed the kingship himself. The ivy wreath and title Dionysos associate the young ruler with the god, whose legendary eastern conquests suited Seleukid royal imagery.
