Byzantine Bronze Bracelet with Elaborate Floral Engraved Decoration, a bronze jewellery item in excellent condition dating to the Middle Byzantine period (circa 10th–12th century AD).
Description from the seller
Byzantine Bronze Bracelet with Elaborate Floral Engraved Decoration
Middle Byzantine Period, circa 10th–12th century AD
Material: Bronze
Weight: 10.4 g
Dimensions: 60.5 × 44.0 × 14.5 mm
From a Private European Collection.
A very rare and exceptionally decorative Byzantine bronze bracelet, dating to the Middle Byzantine period, circa 10th–12th century AD.
Formed from a broad but remarkably slender bronze band with open, rounded terminals, this elegant piece of personal jewellery is distinguished by its extensive hand-incised and punched decoration, covering almost the entire visible exterior surface.
At the centre of the composition is a particularly attractive four-petalled floral rosette, surrounded by symmetrically arranged leaves filled with delicate parallel hatching. Larger stylised vegetal and palmette-like motifs extend towards either side, complemented by carefully applied rows of small punched circles and a decorative dotted border.
Particularly noteworthy are the individually decorated terminals. Rather than leaving these areas plain, the Byzantine craftsman continued the ornamental programme with additional stylised vegetal and geometric designs, creating a remarkably coherent decoration around the bracelet.
A Rare and Elaborately Decorated Example:
Bronze bracelets are known from the Byzantine world; however, examples displaying such an extensive and carefully executed combination of floral, vegetal, geometric, incised and punched ornamentation are considerably less frequently encountered.
Many surviving Byzantine bronze armrings are comparatively simple in their decoration. The unusually rich ornamental programme of the present bracelet – especially its prominent central rosette, finely hatched leaves, repeated punched-circle motifs and decorated terminals – gives this example a particularly distinctive character.
The contrast between the largely undecorated interior and the richly ornamented exterior further demonstrates that the decoration was deliberately designed to be prominently displayed when worn.
Jewellery represented an important element of Byzantine personal appearance and material culture. Decorative motifs derived from leaves, flowers, palmettes and geometric forms belonged to the artistic vocabulary of the Byzantine world and appeared across jewellery, metalwork, textiles and architectural decoration.
Despite its considerable age, the bracelet preserves remarkably clear details of its original engraved and punched ornamentation. The naturally aged bronze surface and attractive patination enhance its archaeological character while allowing the elaborate craftsmanship to remain readily visible.
A very rare, highly decorative and visually impressive example of Middle Byzantine personal jewellery. The unusually rich surviving decoration distinguishes this bracelet from the more commonly encountered simply ornamented Byzantine bronze armrings and makes it a particularly desirable piece for a collection of Byzantine art, ancient jewellery or historical metalwork.
An exceptional collector's piece combining elegance, intricate craftsmanship and a tangible connection with everyday life in the Byzantine world.
