Silver tetrobol from Histiaia, Euboia, dating to ca. 300–100 BC; 12 mm, 1.5 g, AR, ungraded, obverse: head of Histiaia nymph to the right with a grape-leaf wreath; reverse: IΣTI‑AIEΩN with a nymph seated on a galley stern.

Euboia, Histiaia.
300-100 BC.
Tetrobol (Silver, 12 mm, 1.5 g).
Obv: Head of the nymph Histiaia to right, wearing wreath of grape leaves and berries.
Rev: IΣTI- AIEΩN. Nymph seated right on stern of galley, holding stylis in her left hand and resting her right on the deck; on the side of the stern, wing; below, ΣI and labrys.
Reference: BCD Euboia 392. HGC 4, 1524.
Histiaia was a major polis of northern Euboea, commanding a fertile plain and sea routes toward Thessaly. During the Euboean revolt of 446 BC, it was subdued by Pericles, its inhabitants expelled and Athenians settled at Oreos. Later restored, Histiaia became especially renowned for its prolific silver coinage, often depicting the nymph Histiaia seated on a ship’s stern.
