Boffa Virginio of Turin presents a circa 1850–1900 Italian graduated surveyor’s cross (pantometer) in brass with wooden components, measuring 8.5 cm high, 16 cm wide and 9 cm deep, in good antique condition and not tested for surveying accuracy, supplied with its original fitted wooden case (one object).
Description from the seller
Antique Italian graduated surveyor’s cross, also known as a pantometer, manufactured by Boffa Virginio of Turin, circa 1890–1920.
This professional surveying instrument was used by land surveyors and engineers to establish alignments and measure horizontal angles in the field. It consists of two coaxial cylindrical sections made of solid brass. The rotating upper section features sighting slots, while the central silver-coloured band carries a finely engraved graduated scale.
The instrument is accompanied by its original fitted wooden carrying case, bearing the partially faded maker’s stamp:
“BOFFA VIRGINIO – Costruttore”
The instrument displays an attractive original patina, oxidation, scratches and signs of professional use consistent with its age. The wooden case also shows normal wear, marks and minor imperfections. The brass has not been recently polished.
The rotating mechanism and adjustment components move, but the instrument has not been professionally calibrated or tested for surveying accuracy. It is therefore offered as an antique scientific and technical collector’s item.
The tripod or surveying pole is not included.
Materials: solid brass, silver-coloured metal and wood
Manufacturer: Boffa Virginio
Country of origin: Italy
Period: circa 1890–1920
Condition: good antique condition, with age-related wear
Original fitted wooden case included
A fascinating and decorative example of early Italian surveying equipment, suitable for collectors of scientific instruments, engineering antiques and industrial objects.
The photographs form an integral part of the description. The item will be carefully packed for shipping.
