Description from the seller
Rare Napoleonic III Boulognette Wall Clock – Movement Signed Eugène FARCOT, Dial by LALANDE ELBEUF in Elbeuf – Painted cobalt blue sheet iron & gilded bronze – Late 19th century (With Original Key No. 7)
Exceptional and authentic wall clock, the so-called “boulangère” (bread-cook) clock dating from the late 19th century (Napoleon III period / early Art Nouveau). This high-decorative piece stands out for its circular iron sheet case painted in a deep cobalt blue, adorned with a delicate polychrome floral decoration hand-painted (wildflowers, roses and gilded foliage).
The cream-colored dial under glass is signed by the original retailer/clockmaker: “LALANDE ELBEUF” (Normandy region). It features black arabic numerals that are easy to read, a railway minute track, and original finely sculpted and openwork hands.
Collectible mechanism:
The brass backplate bears the official original mark of the renowned Paris clockmaker Eugène FARCOT (symbol of a crossed anchor with a star and the initials E.F. B.). Known for the high quality of his movements and his invention patents, Farcot is the indispensable reference for this type of pendulum clock. The mechanism is an antique spiral movement, complete, functioning with its original wrought-iron winding key marked with the number 7.
The entire structure is elevated by a rich gilded and chiseled bronze ornamentation: an ornate pediment on the upper part, decorative side volutes, and a stylized allegorical false pedestal on the lower portion. The clock is suspended from its original bronze linked hanging chain.
• Era: Late 19th century (circa 1865-1885)
• Materials: Painted iron sheet case, gilded and chiselled bronze ornaments, brass movement, original dial made of paper/cardboard under glass.
• Movement maker: Eugène Farcot (Paris)
• Dial signature: LALANDE ELBEUF
• Accessories: Supplied with its original antique wrought-iron winding key (Size 7).
• Aesthetics: Overall good condition for its age. The gilded bronze ornament shows a magnificent original patina, sound and authentic, with light traces of natural oxidation and verdigris in the chiselled decorations, enhancing its historical charm. The cobalt blue-painted sheet metal retains a beautiful sheen. The original cardboard dial shows uniform yellowing and a network of fine lines/wrinkles due to aging, evidencing its historical authenticity, with no gaps or tears. The protective glass is intact. The case opens correctly at the back.
• Mechanism: The movement is complete, clean and has its key. The movement is locked; a service/overhaul is advisable.
Dimensions & Weight:
• Height: 35.5 cm
• Width: 32.5 cm
• Weight: 1,966 g (1.966 kg)
