Italy - Marche // Umbria; Gerard Mercator (Gerardo Mercatore) / Jodocus Hondius - Marcha Anconitana cum Spoletano Ducatu - 1601-1620

Rare and fascinating historical map of central Italy, detailing the territory of the Marca di Ancona (Marche region) and the neighboring Duchy of Spoleto (Umbria). The map is oriented with the east at the top (the Adriatic coast runs along the upper edge and right edge).
The work is rich in topographic details, pronounced micro-relief mountain features, rivers, hamlets, and ancient towns of the Marche and Umbrian hinterland. In the bottom right there is a splendid Baroque cartouche in Rollwerk style that encloses the Latin title, while along the upper margin is the alternative French title (Marche d'Ancona & Duché de Spolete). A collectible piece of great importance for the history of Italian regional cartography.

The sheet is intact and with margins well preserved.
