Description from the seller
Scientific rarity in perfection: Pugilina tupiniquim (93 mm) in GEM quality
For demanding systematic collectors and enthusiasts of neotropical marine fauna: For sale is an absolutely flawless shell of the Tupiniquim melon, Pugilina tupiniquim. This 93 mm specimen captivates with sculptural elegance and is in the rare GEM condition. The deep chocolate-brown to chestnut coloration contrasts superbly with the distinctive light spiral bands. Each whorl is perfectly preserved, the spiral cord appears three-dimensionally raised, and the elongated aperture, typical of predatory snails, shows no damage.
What’s notable, life, & origin:
The species & discovery: Pugilina tupiniquim has a fascinating scientific history. Until 2015, these animals were mistakenly assigned to the African sister species Pugilina morio. Only anatomical and genetic studies by malacologists Abbate and Simone demonstrated that it is a separate west Atlantic species. It was named in honor of the indigenous Brazilian tribe Tupiniquim.
Life, habitat, & origin: These marine predatory snails are typical inhabitants of mangrove systems, estuaries (river mouths), and shallow tidal zones. They live on fine sand and mud substrates in water depths of 0 to 2 meters. There they feed primarily as scavengers (necrophages) on dead organic material or hunt other mollusks. In life, the shell is often covered by a thick, dark velvety periostracum.
Origin: This collectible comes from the tropical coastal regions of Brazil
