Description from the seller
Egypt & Abyssinia — two historic landscapes, one impressive atlas sheet.
A large engraved double map pairing the Nile Valley of Egypt with Abyssinia, the historic region centred on present-day Ethiopia. Fine place names, river networks, shaded mountain ranges and delicate hand-coloured boundaries give the sheet both visual appeal and geographical detail.
The printed imprint reads: “Drawn & Engraved for Thomson’s New General Atlas 1817.” The two panels are titled “EGYPT” and “ABYSSINIA”. One sheet containing two maps.
Egypt follows the Nile from its Mediterranean delta through Upper Egypt, with the Red Sea to the east. The Abyssinia panel shows the highlands, river systems and Red Sea coast, with historical regional names and a reference key.
Dimensions (height × width):
Printed map area: approximately 49 × 59.5 cm.
Full paper sheet, including margins: approximately 55 × 71 cm.
Condition: age-related paper toning, scattered spotting, areas of staining and visible fold creases, including the central fold. The verso is blank, with visible staining and age-related marks. Please inspect all photographs for the condition of the paper, margins and printed surface. The photographs form part of the description.
An attractive large-format piece for collectors of Egypt, Ethiopia, the Nile and early nineteenth-century cartography.
Carefully packed with protective materials and sent with tracked shipping.
