Replica of the skull of a juvenile Maiasaura peeblesorum, scientifically Maiasaura peeblesorum, from the Late Cretaceous Campanian period (Upper Two Medicine Formation, Montana, USA), Molded and presented as a reproduction replica.
Description from the seller
A life-sized replica of the skull of a juvenile Maiasaura peeblesorum is offered, the famous hadrosaurid (duck-billed dinosaur) that revolutionized modern paleontology by providing the first direct evidence of parental care in dinosaurs. The original mold comes from deposits of the Upper Two Medicine Formation in Montana, USA.
• Piece length: 37 cm long, with anatomical dimensions exact for the juvenile growth stage of the specimen. (For reference, adults of this species reached skull lengths significantly larger, over 65 cm).
• Notable morphological details: The piece showcases the ontogeny (development) of the species in great detail. Since this is a young specimen, the characteristic flattened beak is fully formed, while the small solid frontonasal crest between the eyes appears as a slight incipient bump, a trait that fully developed upon reaching skeletal maturity.
Geological and Temporal Context
• Exact geological period: Late Cretaceous. Specifically in the Campanian stage (approximately 76 to 74 million years ago).
• Geological formation: Upper member of the Two Medicine Formation (Montana, United States), one of the richest and most important terrestrial ecosystem deposits of the North American Mesozoic.
