In one glance:
Material: nickel-plated metal, brass, glass, paper
Dimensions: 15 x 13 x 9.5 cm
Weight: 745 grams
Brand: no factory mark, signature or label; on the movement only W.T, F.S, H.S, W.A and no. 286
Dating: circa 1900-1930
Provenance: from the collection of a clock enthusiast
Description and context:
Rectangular case with a projecting roof and a wavy brass back door, on a profiled base with four corner feet. The paper dial has heavy Arabic numerals and blue-blued hands. A Junghans travel clock in the Museum Collection (Schramberg, 1890-1910, inv. 102/MMP) shows the same case, base, size and dial arrangement. There is a musical mechanism in the base here a bell. The numeral type is heavier than on the museum piece. The English-language markings on the movement (W.T, F.S, H.S, W.A) suit an English-speaking market. The open side openings reveal brass gears on the nickel-plated plate.
Condition:
Fair. Side windows: both missing, the openings are open. Nickel plating: worn and flaked along the roof edge and side stiles, with a dark underlayer. Bottom: rust and staining. Dial: speckled, glass in front intact. Mechanism: runs not and has not been checked; the bell is present. See the images.
In the interior:
Fits on a desk, mantle or bookcase in an eclectic or classical interior. The brass front catches the light, the nickel-plated base provides a cool contrast.
Shipping:
Professionally packed in a sturdy box with padding, for fragile objects a double box. Always insured with Track and Trace. See the feedback from previous buyers.
Attribution and sources:
Attributed to Gebr. Junghans A.G., Schramberg, by form and size; no maker’s mark. Kienzle (Schwenningen) does not fit in height and front glass. Other Black Forest factories cannot be ruled out. The museum record dates the model to 1890-1910; the numeral type may indicate a later version.
