Description from the seller
Antique Victorian Desk Inkwell / Encrier with Stag Head and Blue Opaline Bowl - Silver Plated - circa 1880
Beautiful and rare antique desk ink set from the Victorian era, circa 1860-1890.
The ink set consists of an oval silver-plated base with a central pedestal holding a bowl of sky-blue opaline glass with a gold edge. Crowned by a highly detailed stag head with large antlers in bronze/silver-plated metal. The antlers originally served as a pen rest.
The base features:
• 2 round openings for glass ink pots
• 1 elongated pen tray at the front
• Central opaline bowl for sand, stamps, or small office items
This type of Stag Head Inkstand is typically English/French and was produced by, among others, W.W. Harrison & Co. A very decorative piece for a classic desk, hunting room, or library.
Materials: Silver-plated metal, bronze, blue opaline glass
Period: Victorian, circa 1880
Style: Naturalism / Hunting decor
Provenance: Private collection
In antique, used condition appropriate for its age. The silvering shows wear, scratches, and patina/oxidation, most visible on the underside (see photos). Opaline bowl in good condition, no visible chips, but with light signs of use. The two original glass ink pots with lids are missing – the rings are empty. The threading at the underside for the base is visible and lightly rusted. All in all a charming object with a beautiful patina that remains very decorative.
Seems a bit stiff to write, but you can rotate the base.
Good luck with your bidding.
