Description from the seller

XVIIIth-century painting, Madonna Addolorata (oil on canvas)

Title: Madonna Addolorata
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: about 65.5 × 83 cm
Condition: Excellent, after professional restoration
provenance: Private collection
Dating: 18th century

Suggestive and expressive depiction of Madonna Addolorata, painted in oil on canvas in the 18th century. The Virgin is represented in half-figure, gazing toward the heavens and with hands joined on the light drapery, in an intense pose of sorrow and meditation. The large symbolic sword completes the scene, recalling the iconographic tradition of the Mater Dolorosa.

The painting, subtle and luminous, shows a refined use of glazing and a particular softness in the portrayal of the face and the drapery. The architectural background creates a delicate compositional balance without diverting from the subject’s pathos.

Historical and stratigraphic value

The restoration report highlights the presence of numerous prior paint layers and ancient pentimenti, including recognizable figures (Child, angels, altered arms, and iconographic details).
This is a rare and precious stratification, testifying to the long history of the canvas and the artistic reconsiderations that occurred over the centuries.

The restorer, Marco Mignarri (art and restoration – restoration lecturer in Siena), consciously chose not to conceal these traces, but to enhance them, as they contribute significantly to the work’s uniqueness, historical documentation, and the unrepeatable character of the piece.

Professional restoration

The painting has undergone a careful conservation intervention, documented in the report to be sent together with the artwork and including:

• Controlled surface cleaning with suitable solutions.

• Removal of the old oxidized varnish layer.

• Consolidation of the painting film.

• Mechanical cleaning of the verso and removal of the old warped lining.

• Repair of tears and reintegration with reversible materials.

• Perimeter lining and replacement of the frame with a new spruce one treated with mordanting.

• Chromatic reintegration and filling of lacunae.

• Final protective varnish.

The restoration, carried out with museum standards, has restored integrity, legibility, and stability to the work, respecting its original material and its important documentary value.

A painting of great elegance and emotional intensity, ideal for collectors of ancient sacred art and for connoisseurs of works with a stratified history and museum-grade conservation.

Photos are an integral part of the description. Guaranteed careful packaging entrusted to industry professionals.
