Description from the seller
Important liturgical goblet in 800 silver – rich Eucharistic iconography – Italy, around 1970
Elegant and important Italian liturgical goblet, cup in 800 silver, body in gilded brass, of notable weight and excellent workmanship, datable approximately to the second half of the 20th century, about the 1960s-70s.
The piece presents a refined modernist-leaning structure, characterized by a large polygonal base subdivided into geometrically incised fields and finely decorated with numerous symbols of Christian and Eucharistic tradition. Among others, the monogram IHS, the Mystical Lamb, Christological symbols, angelic figures, and motifs related to the Eucharist are recognizable.
The stem, also polygonal, is embellished with decorations of grape clusters and ears of wheat, a clear reference to the wine and bread of the Eucharist. The cup, with simple and elegant lines, features a splendid inner gilding, particularly bright and well preserved.
The alternation between gilded surfaces and silvered details gives the goblet a highly rich and scenographic appearance, while maintaining the sobriety typical of sacred goldsmithing of the second half of the twentieth century.
The assay mark “800” is present, certifying the silver quality, accompanied by another maker’s mark, unfortunately poorly legible in the current condition; for this reason a definite attribution to the manufacturer cannot be provided.
Measurements:
Height: 19.5 cm
Cup diameter: 10 cm
Maximum base diameter: about 13.5 cm
Overall weight: about 630 g
The object is presented in overall excellent condition, with normal and light traces of time compatible with its age and use. The gilding shows a lovely brightness and the rich decoration of the base is clear and legible.
A goblet of strong decorative presence and notable quality, interesting both as a liturgical object and for a 20th-century sacral silver collection.
The photographs are an integral part of the description and show in detail the state of preservation, decorations, and hallmarks.
The object will be carefully protected and packed according to professional criteria to ensure maximum safety during transport.
