Charming and symbolic patinated brass sculpture depicting a great owl watching over its three owlets, all perched on a stack of old books. A decorative piece of exquisite craftsmanship, rich in meaning and with remarkable softness.
The owl — universal symbol of wisdom, knowledge and learning since ancient Greece, where it was the attribute of Athena — is rendered here in all its protective majesty: wings slightly spread as if to shelter its young, piercing and attentive gaze, plumage treated with admirable precision and attention to detail. The three young owls cuddled up against it, with large expressive round eyes, bring a familial and endearing dimension to the composition. The whole rests on a stack of open books, reinforcing the theme of the transmission of knowledge from generation to generation.
The warm brown-gold patina, with beautiful golden nuances on the feathers and deeper tones in the hollows of the books, gives the piece depth and elegance. The sculpture is signed Milo (molders’ mark). It rests on a rectangular black veined marble base.
