Description from the seller
Remarkable and intellectually captivating bronze patinated sculpture depicting a thoughtful monkey sitting on a pile of books, holding a human skull in its hands and contemplating it with meditative intensity. A piece with a strong symbolic and philosophical charge, sure to evoke reflection and conversation.
The composition is rich in narrative details carefully engraved: you can clearly discern the name "Darwin" on one of the stacked books, direct reference to the theory of evolution, and the Latin phrase "Eritis Sicut Deus" ("You will be like gods", quoted from Genesis) on another volume fallen to the ground — a dizzying confrontation between science and religion, reason and faith.
The monkey, rendered with precise and expressive anatomical modeling, adopts a posture inspired by Rodin's famous Thinker, the hand raised to the chin in a gesture of deep meditation. The human skull with empty eye sockets, held delicately, alludes to vanity and the mortal condition of man. The whole composition — monkey, skull, scattered books — forms a powerful allegory about the origin of man, knowledge and humanity's place in the universe.
The warm dark-gold patina is of high quality, with beautiful nuances in the hollows of the books and in the flesh.
Material: Bronze patinated brown-gold
Base: Rectangular black marble
Style: Allegorical / Philosophical / Symbolist
Theme: Darwinian evolution, vanity, science vs religion
Inscriptions: "Darwin" and "Eritis Sicut Deus" engraved on the books
Type: Decorative reproduction
Condition: Very good condition
