Processional altar cross from Ethiopia, a traditional Ethiopian Orthodox hand cross (yaegg masqal) in Lalibela or Gondar style, made of brass or bronze, 44.5 cm high, 22 cm wide, 1 cm deep, weighing 654 g, dating from ca. 1940–1970, in good condition with minor signs of aging and stains.
Description from the seller
Traditional Ethiopian Orthodox hand cross or processional cross (also called yaegg masqal or Coptic cross), probably made of brass or bronze.
Type object: Hand cross / blessing cross of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
Features: It has an openwork diamond-shaped central section, geometric decorations and a distinctive grip that ends at the bottom in a square or stylized foot.
Given the length of almost 45 cm and the substantial weight of 654 g, this object was originally designed as a processional cross or a large altar cross.
Estimated age: Mid-20th century (ca. 1940 - 1970).
The file and chisel marks on the shaft and the geometric cutouts are typical of active production in this period in Ethiopian craft centers (such as Addis Ababa or Axum).
Will be shipped by registered mail and well packed.
