Lot of two autograph letters signed by Émile de Najac to Edmond About, dated 12 August 1864 and 11 September 1865, written on laid paper with a crown monogram, 13.1 x 20.5 cm, condition Very good, with the author’s autograph, originating from France.
Description from the seller
Two autograph letters signed by Émile de Najac, French playwright and librettist, intimate friend of the writer Edmond About, addressed to the latter, dated August 12, 1864 and September 11, 1865.
Written in brown ink on two double sheets of laid paper with a cold-stamped header featuring a county crown surmounting the monogram "N".
Émile de Najac warmly congratulates his correspondent on the birth of his daughter Valentine, relates with a great sense of humor an anecdote about a villager who swore to strike down "the infamous About" before seeing his barn burned by "the finger of God", and deftly handles irony about his friend's anticlericalism by imagining the Pope inviting him to the table of Veuillot and Dupanloup.
Dimensions: 13.1 x 20.5 cm
Condition: Old pencil annotations by a former collector; otherwise fine condition. See photos for more details.
Number of pages: 7 pages
Careful shipment in a rigid and watertight packaging.
- Fernand Émile de Najac, born December 14, 1828 in Lorient and died April 11, 1889 in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, was a French librettist. He wrote a very large number of texts during the Second Empire and the early Third Republic, particularly opera librettos, most often in one act. Wikipedia
- François Edmond Valentin About, born February 14, 1828 in Dieuze and died January 16, 1885 in Paris 9th arrondissement, was a French writer, journalist and art critic, member of the Académie française. Wikipedia
