Description from the seller
From a private collection and of legitimate provenance
Madonna with Child
Jesus (Salvator Mundi / Madonna of the Globe)
Period: Late 18th - 19th Century (19th century)
Origin: Tuscany-Emilia Italy
Solid wood carved from a single trunk (monobloc)
Finish: Traces of ancient polychromy and contemporaneous gilding
Finish: Traces of ancient polychromy and contemporaneous gilding
Dimensions: Height approximately 80 cm; 30 x 28 cm
Conditions: Structurally solid, in good overall condition relative to the era.
Shows signs of time, widespread losses and flaking of the paint layer that reveal the wood grain, giving a charming patina of age.
Natural cracks from wood shrinkage at the rear and on the base, typical of pieces carved from a single trunk. The Virgin’s right hand features a visible pin/tenon, probably originally intended to hold a detachable attribute (e.g., scepter or rosary) or the result of an ancient contemporaneous restoration.
Detailed description of the work:
Refined and imposing devotional sculpture in solid wood depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. The little Jesus is depicted blessing with his right hand, while with the left he holds the globe, an ancient symbol of divine sovereignty over the world.
The work is wholly hand-carved in the round from a single block of wood. Of great expressive charm are the faces and the flowing drapery of the garments, which still retain precious fragments of the original blue pigment and the ancient leaf gilding. The statue rests on a circular base integrated into the same block. A piece of high decorative and collectible value, ideal for antiques and period interiors.
The object will be professionally packed and protected to ensure safe shipping.
Tracked and insured shipping.
