Description from the seller
Reliquary of the Holy Cross – Lignum Crucis – Italy, 19th century
Reliquary in gilded alloy, presumably bronze, Italian workmanship of the 19th century
The architectured and completely openwork mount presents a rich Baroque decoration of angels in relief, scrolls and foliage, arranged around a central theca.
The whole, resting on four feet with scrolls and surmounted by a cross, is punctuated with red and green glass cabochons, bringing a remarkable polychromy to the gilded decoration.
Relic of the Holy Cross
The central theca contains a relic of the Holy Cross (Lignum Crucis), consisting of two fragments of wood arranged in the shape of a cross on their ancient support, under glass.
On the reverse, the theca retains its ecclesiastical seal in red wax bearing arms, still in place.
Very beautiful example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, remarkable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic decoration and the quality of its execution.
Wear and small old alterations in keeping with age and use.
