POTENZA – Veduta Prospettica della Città is an uncoloured aquaforte map of Potenza, Basilicata, Italy, by Giovanni Battista Pacichelli (ideatore) and Francesco Cassiano de Silva (disegno/incisione), measuring 130 by 180 mm on period carta vergata, with a Baroque Napoli decorative program, a vertical legend A–P identifying major sites, in good condition as a first 1703 issue.
Description from the seller
Fascinating and rare bird's-eye view of the city of Potenza, historic capital of Basilicata. The work shows the medieval historic core magnificently perched on the hill.
The print is rich in decorative elements typical of Neapolitan cartographic Baroque:
• At the top right it bears a ribbon cartouche with the inscription "POTENZA".
• The corners on the right host two heraldic escutcheons enriched with volutes.
• On the left side there is a large empty heraldic cartouche with a scalloped frame.
• At the bottom margin (arranged vertically on the left of the sheet due to the original editorial layout) there is a detailed legend with alphabetical references from A to P, identifying the main historical and religious landmarks of the city, including Porta Salza, the Church of San Michele, the Santissima Trinità, the Palazzo Vescovile (Vescovato) and the ancient Bridge of San Vito.
• Excellent specimen. The ink impression is sharp and well pressed, typical of the early 1703 printings.
• Support: contemporary laid paper with the thickness and texture original to the period.
