Description from the seller

Reliquary Ex Tunicam D.N.J.C – Italy, 19th century

Reliquary in gilded alloy, Italian 19th-century workmanship.

The architecturally framed and fully openwork mount presents a rich Baroque decoration of angels in relief, volutes and foliage, organized around a central theca. The whole, resting on four scroll-feet and surmounted by a cross, is punctuated by red and green glass cabochons, imparting a remarkable polychromy to the gilded decor.

The central theca contains a relic placed on a textile background. The upper titulus reads “Ex Tunicam” — more likely for Ex Tunica — meaning “from the Tunic.” The lower titulus “D.N.J.C.” corresponds to Domini Nostri Jesu Christi, “of Our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is therefore a fragment traditionally attributed to the Holy Tunic of Christ, presented in the center on a red silk background, under glass.

On the reverse, the theca retains its ecclesiastical seal in red wax with heraldic initials, still in place.

A very beautiful example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, remarkable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic decoration, and the quality of its execution.

Worn with small ancient alterations in keeping with age and use.
