Description from the seller
Grand Agnus Dei wax seal – Pius IX – 1877
Important blessed Agnus Dei in wax, dated 1877, produced during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX (Pius IX).
One side features the sovereign pontiff in papal robes, wearing the tiara and holding the papal cross. The lower part bears the name Pius IX along with the date 1877.
On the reverse is the Agnus Dei, the mystical Lamb crowned, lying on the Book with seven seals and bearing the cruciform banner, following the traditional iconography of papal Agnus Dei.
These wax medallions were solemnly blessed in Rome and then distributed as objects of devotion. This example stands out for its particularly large dimensions and the quality of its reliefs.
It is accompanied by its original envelope bearing papal arms and an ecclesiastical seal, an element of interest for provenance.
Rome, Vatican, 1877 – Pontificate of Pius IX.
Ivory-colored wax molded.
Old transverse crack, visible on both faces, with wear and small nicks around the edge. Nevertheless, the reliefs remain particularly well preserved and legible.
Display stand not included.
And 1877 is a particularly interesting date: it corresponds to the last full year of Pius IX’s pontificate, who died in February 1878.
The photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement their presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
