AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Magnificent antique oak fall-front secretaire, England, 18th century

This exceptionally fine and multifunctional piece of furniture combines the sleek, imposing appearance of a classic chest of drawers with the surprising interior of a full writing desk (secretaire).

In the closed state, the piece looks like a monumental chest of drawers with a slanted side. The top compartment is actually a cleverly fold-out writing surface. Underneath lie four wide drawers resting on elegant, original bracket feet (molded console feet). The furniture is made of oak with a deep, warm patina that has developed naturally over the centuries.

As soon as the top lid is pulled forward and the front panel folds down (supported by the two oak supporting beams), an breathtaking and highly detailed interior is revealed. This interior is a true work of art in its own right:

• Seven interior drawers with refined knobs

• Eight open compartments (pigeon holes) for documents.

• One central compartment with a beautifully carved rosette and, beside it, two fine side compartments

The back of the cabinet (see detail photo) shows unmistakable features of an authentic 18th‑century piece: wide, hand-planed wooden panels with a lovely historical patina

The secretaire is in good, immediately usable antique condition. Here and there are signs of use inherent to the age, which give the piece extra character. The key is missing but can be easily replaced. And the upper drawer is missing a metal holder in which the handle rests; the handle itself is present.

This piece fits perfectly in a classical antique interior, but it also forms a fantastic, characterful contrast in a sleek, modern design interior!

Given its value and size, this object must be picked up.
