Description from the seller
Monumental specimen of Kranaosphinctes rabei from southwestern Madagascar — This exceptional specimen represents a fossil ammonite of the species Kranaosphinctes rabei, belonging to the family Perisphinctidae. Its formation dates to the Late Jurassic, Oxfordian stage, chronologically positioned between 161 and 156 million years ago. The shell, although a fossil, preserves remarkable three-dimensionality and intact morphology, with the outer chamber well defined and the central coil clearly legible, typical of these extinct cephalopods. Visual analysis reveals a surface of extraordinary chromatic beauty, with tones ranging from ivory white to calcitic cream, enriched by shades of honey beige and golden ochre. These colorations are the result of millions of years of mineralization in the carbonate marine sediments of the Morondava Basin in southwestern Madagascar. Although there are some superficial cracks and light traces of iron inclusions, which attest to the natural fossilization process, the shell maintains notable structural integrity. The geological provenance of this piece is the Morondava Basin, located in the Atsimo-Andrefana region (formerly Toliara/Tuléar Province) of southwestern Madagascar, particularly in the Sakaraha area. This geological context is renowned for the preservation of Jurassic marine fossils, offering a unique window into the marine ecosystems of that era. Aesthetically, the specimen is a natural masterpiece. The radial ribs, well-marked and symmetric, give dynamism to the spiral, evoking the intrinsic beauty of natural geometric forms. The size and weight qualify it as a museum piece, capable of capturing attention and serving as a focal point in any display environment or collection. The state of preservation is excellent for a fossil of this age and size. Despite the fragile nature of fossils, this Kranaosphinctes rabei has preserved its shape and surface details notably well. Cleaning and stabilization have been carried out with care, ensuring the specimen is ready to be displayed without the need for further interventions. The absence of a dedicated support or base allows the buyer to choose the most suitable display solution for their needs. The collectible value of a Kranaosphinctes rabei fossil of such size and quality is considerable. Specimens of this species, and especially of this magnitude, are rare on the market and highly sought after by private collectors, museums, and scientific institutions. It represents not only a precious paleontological document but also a visually striking object, ideal for enriching a paleontological collection, a Wunderkammer, a study, or as a naturalistic interior design element. Its scientific importance and aesthetic charm make it a high-profile cultural and decorative investment.
