Description from the seller

Our Lady “Comforter of my sorrows” in Russian “Утоли моя печали” (Utoli moja pechali).
- The Cyrillic inscription on the right corresponds to “Утоли моя печали,” literally “Calm/console my sorrows.”
- The Virgin appears with her head inclined toward her hand, a gesture of reverence and compassion.
- The Child Jesus is seated in her arms and looks toward the Mother, while holding a scroll.
- On the Virgin’s mantle appear the three traditional stars of the Mother of God: virginity before, during, and after Christ’s birth.
- The letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (Μήτηρ Θεοῦ, Meter Theou) mean “Mother of God.”
Regarding the piece you show
It is an antique Russian icon, from the nineteenth century,
The iconography of “Utoli moya pechali” is especially interesting because the Virgin appears in a posture of sorrow and compassion, and for that reason she became an image that people turned to to seek consolation in afflictions.
