Gothic late Castellano crucifix carved and polychromed wood from Castile, dating to ca. 1450–1480, with a radial silver-plated nimbus, measuring 106.5 cm high and 62 cm wide (Christ 60 cm high and 54 cm wide) and weighing 4.2 kg, in acceptable, heavily used condition with minor parts possibly missing.
Description from the seller
Christ crucified, carved and polychromed wood, made in Castile around 1450–1480, within late Castilian Gothic, possibly in the circle of Burgos workshops. It stands out for the elongated stylization of the figure, the treatment of the perizonium with linear and broken folds typical of Gothic art, and especially for the face of great expressive intensity, with closed eyes and a slightly open mouth, following the tradition of Christus patiens. It preserves a Gothic radial nimbus carved and finished with fine silver leaf, of great ornamental interest.
The sculpture preserves its ancient original polychromy (two small destructive tests were made to verify this), although it presents a devotional historical repaint, probably from the late 17th or early 18th century, in addition to wear and losses typical of its age. Cross and interventions from a later period.
Anonymous work from a Castilian workshop, without attribution to a specific sculptor. The sculpture preserves an important presence and devotional character originally.
The measurements of the Cross are 106 cm high and 62 cm wide.
The measurement of the Christ is 60 cm high and 54 cm wide.
