Fifty VOC duiten from the 18th century, copper and uncleaned, from the Dutch East Indies, found in a North Sea shipwreck near Texel; not certified.
Description from the seller
The United East India Company, abbreviated as VOC (1602–1800), was a private Dutch trading company with a monopoly on overseas trade granted by the States-General between the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and the area east of the Cape of Good Hope and west of the Strait of Magellan. The VOC maintained throughout its entire existence the exclusive right to conclude treaties, wage war, seize and build forts and trading posts (factorijen), and appoint administrators. The VOC gradually became a territorial power through the conquest of the Banda Islands (1609–1621), the coastal part of Ceylon (1640–1656) and, in particular, of all of Java during the Java Succession Wars (1703–1755).
“ SEE PHOTOS FOR A GOOD IMPRESSION “
In this lot you will find VOC duiten (coins) from among others Zeeland, Holland, Utrecht, West-Friesland and Gelderland.
These coins were found in a shipwreck that was discovered in the North Sea near the Dutch coast around the Marsdiep near Texel. Unfortunately there is no documentation available about the hundreds of coins that have been found. In the photo you can clearly see that the coins lay on top of each other; many coins show part of an impression from another coin. The copper color also reveals that the coins have been underwater for a long time. Because there is unfortunately no proof available, you are bidding on 50 “ordinary/normal” VOC duiten, but you are buying 50 VOC duiten that originate from a shipwreck.
