Specimen Melongena corona, 130 mm, GEM condition, original, year 1982, country of origin South America, scientific name Melongena corona.
Description from the seller
Scientific name: Melongena corona (Gmelin, 1791) – in the German-speaking world known as the American crown snail or simply crown snail.
Product details & quality
Size: 130.0 mm (Absolute giant growth! The species reaches on average 60–100 mm, specimens from 120 mm are considered exceptionally large and collectible).
Quality: GEM (Flawless collector condition. The circulating, titular crown spines on the shoulders are fully intact, sharp and unbroken. The highly glossy aperture as well as the long siphon canal show no defects).
Note on the operculum: This species has a thick, claw-like operculum made of horn. (If the operculum is present on your specimen, be sure to mention it in the listing, as it further increases value).
Origin & collection data
Region: Subtropical West Atlantic (Mainly distributed along the coasts of Florida, the Keys, the Gulf of Mexico, and parts of the Caribbean).
Habitat: Estuaries, mangrove swamps, shallow salt marshes and muddy tidal areas with low current. They also tolerate brackish water.
Biology & lifestyle
The crown snail belongs to the family Melongenidae. Its most striking feature is the sculptured shell with a row of sharp, upward-pointing spines on the shoulder whorl, giving the shell the appearance of a crown.
Diet: Melongena corona is an extremely predatory and aggressive carnivore. It predominantly feeds on bivalves (such as oysters and clams) as well as other snails. Cannibalism on smaller conspecifics is also common.
