Ancient Egyptian faience mummiform worker shabti from the Third Intermediate Period (circa 1069–664 BC), measuring approximately 10.2 cm long and 3.4 cm wide, wearing a tripartite wig and carrying farming equipment, with discolouration and repairs to the legs, and described as original/official in condition.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A fine Ancient Egyptian faience mummiform worker shabti made of faience. The figure is shown standing, with their hands joined across their abdomen. The figure wears a tripartite wig and carries farming equipment, including a seed basket on their back. The wig, face, and arms are moulded into the faience but the details of the farm equipment and of the wig are painted on with dark pigment; the seed basket is represented by a hatched square on the back. There is discolouration, scratching and pigment loss on the surface of the figure, particularly on the back, consistent with the object’s age. The bottom of the shabti has been repaired with the lower part of the legs and feet reattached. A crack and glue residue are visible.

Shabtis (or ushabtis) were figurines in mummified form, which were placed in Egyptian tombs to do any work required by the deceased in the afterlife. They were often inscribed with a special formula (Shabti formula), which would call them to life when recited. Sometimes shabtis were also inscribed with passages from the Book of the Dead, the intention of which was to secure safety for the deceased in the afterlife. Shabtis were mostly made of faience, but wood, bronze, and stone were also used – towards the Late Period, the number of shabtis inside the tomb increased, eventually allowing one for each day of the year.
