Mesopotamian haematite cylinder seal, circa 2nd–1st millennium BC, with a presentation scene and a stylised Tree of Life, in very good condition, H 1.8 cm × Ø 0.7 cm, original/authentic, provenance Ex S Collection, London.
Description from the seller
A finely incised Mesopotamian cylindrical seal, produced from black haematite stone. The carving depicts what looks like a presentation scene. Two figures are depicted facing each other and what looks like a stylised tree or altar, possibly the sacred tree. The figure on the right, possibly a ruler or a deity, is depicted seated, wearing an elaborate dress with a sash across the chest. An ibex or a fawn stands on its hind legs near the figure's seat. Opposite is a standing figure wearing a more simple attire. Both figures are reaching towards the tiered granulated object in the middle, very likely a stylised tree of life. The seal comes with a museum-quality baked impression. Good condition with clear figures and inscription.
Seals were often made of stone however there are also examples rendered in bone, ivory, faience, glass, metal, wood, and even sun-dried or baked clay. In the ancient world, seals guaranteed the authenticity of marked ownership – as such, they were instrumental in legal transactions, and in the protection of goods against theft. Seal amulets with stylised animals have been found throughout Mesopotamia in contexts dating to the late fourth millennium BC, although stamp seals and cylinder seals were the predominant types in the ancient Near East.
Measurements: (Circa) H 1.8cm x Diameter 0.7cm
Provenance: Ex S Collection, London, UK, 1970-1990s
