Description from the seller
Original drawings by Marten Toonder (Studio's) have always been extremely rare and that can and will never change. In 2010, from Toonder's estate, namely the physical part (the original drawings and letters and such) that Marten Toonder himself made, was definitively incorporated into the collection of the Letterkundig Museum Leiden and has since then been the property of the Dutch state. Also the drawings by employees of Marten Toonder Studios are housed in museums. See the last photo. The chance that original drawings come onto the market has thus become very small.
Jan Dirk van Exter (13/10/1915 - 11 May 1982, Amsterdam) began his career in 1932 at the Heldersche Courant. From 1934 he was a freelance copywriter and illustrator for various magazines. Just as this would start, war broke out. In 1943-44 Jan Dirk van Exter worked at the Toonder-Geesink Studios. In December 1946 van Exter began with the balloon strip 'Rikki en de Waterdemon van het Alkmaarder-meer' for several Noord-Holland daily papers. This strip was taken over a year later by all papers of the then newly established Regionale Dagblad Pers and ran until 1956, as did Van Exter's children's strip 'Pim, Pam en Pom'.
Van Exter's most successful strip was 'Brommy en Tommy', which appeared in the newspaper Het Parool from 26 September 1958 to 1978. This long-running text strip about two cute bears was transformed into balloon-strip format in 1972. Many of his strips were reissued.
His series 'Rikki Visser' had a strong influence on Dick Vlottes. In the Dutch city of Almere two streets are named after 'Rikki Visser' and 'Brommy en Tommy' and another after Van Exter himself, all part of the district "Striphelden".
This lot contains a beautiful, large, original drawing (a complete daily strip) from a Brommy en Tommy story. Original work by Van Exter’s Brommy en Tommy is almost not in circulation. A piquant detail is that Van Exter drew a wonderful pre-layout on the other side of the strip. See the photos.
