Ancient Greek bronze bowl, hemispherical with a flattened base, diameter 18.2 cm and height 6.2 cm, brown‑green patination with surface encrustations, dating to circa 4th–1st century BC, in fair condition with cracks near the base, authenticity original, provenance Abelita family collection (acquired 1980–2015) from a private collection.
Description from the seller
A finely cast and hammered ancient Greek bronze bowl featuring a hemispherical shape with a flattened base. Its slightly convex walls slant upwards, leading to a wide mouth with thick flattened reinforced rim. The bowl is covered in a lovely brown-green patination and earthly encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear are consistent with age, such as scratches to the surface of both the interior and exterior. Dents around the base of the bowl. Crack near the base.
Vessels were made in Ancient Greece in a wide variety of shapes and materials, for example bronze (such as this example), terracotta, glass, stone, wood, and more. They served a number of different purposes, including as funerary, votive, medicinal, or domestic items for washing or for holding wine, oils, water, and cosmetics. Bronze, as an alloy of copper, which was widely available in the ancient Mediterranean, tin, and sometimes lead, was a cheaper alternative to silver and gold. Thus, many more bronze vessels survive, buried in tombs or grave sites.
Measurements: (circa) Diameter 18.2cm x H 6.2cm
Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection.
