AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Magnificent and celebrated original copper engraving from the mid-17th century, depicting the historic fortified town of Chiusa (Klausen) in South Tyrol, dominated on the right by the spectacular and imposing sheer cliff of the Sabiona Monastery (Säben). The print illustrates with extraordinary precision the medieval urban layout along the Isarco Valley, the course of the defensive walls, and the various churches in the area. The composition is enhanced in the upper part by two finely engraved heraldic crests: the key, symbol of the city of Chiusa, on the left, and the imperial double-headed eagle on the right. In the lower right there is a detailed cartouche with a numeric legend in German (from 1 to 13) identifying the main historic monuments, including the historic city gates and fortifications. The work was masterfully engraved and printed by the renowned master Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593 - 1650). This specific sheet constitutes the first official printed iconography of the city of Chiusa and is drawn from the renowned geographic-descriptive work
