Description from the seller
Amsterdam School • proverb board 'As two dogs fight over a bone' • c. 1920–1930
As two dogs fight over one bone, the third walks away with it: a proverb board that literally shows that. Two black dogs stand at the kennel, a brown dog runs off with the bone. Template decoration with leafy border, circa 1920–1930, from the Holland Handelsmerk series.
For this object a Buy Now price has also been set, for those who want to acquire it immediately without waiting.
In one glance:
Material: white earthenware, template decoration painted with the brush, transparent glaze
Dimensions: height 3.5 cm, diameter 22.5 cm
Weight: 433 grams
Mark: no factory mark, signature or label observed; back white
Dating: ca. 1920–1930
Provenance: From a Dutch private collection
Description and context:
Round plate with the proverb in green stencil letters around the mirror, written as Als twee honden vechten om 1 been dan loopt de derde er me heen. Two black dogs stand snout to snout in front of a light yellow doghouse. On the grass lies a brown feeding bowl. In the foreground a brown dog runs away with a bone in its mouth. The wide rim consists of cream-yellow leaf shapes, alternating with black triangles with a dot. The plate belongs to a series of proverb boards known to collectors as Holland Handelsmerk, after the brand with a potkachel (pot-belly stove) that some boards bear.
Condition:
Good. Front: a few dark spots in the glaze, production-related. On the right edge sits a small white protrusion in the glaze. In the ring around the mirror, lower right, a few gray dots instead of black; this appears to be a color gradient from firing. Back: white, with the usual firing faults such as glaze pits, also production-related. Cracks have not been observed; not examined under UV light. See the images. Decorative object, not suitable for foods.
In the interior:
Fits in an Amsterdam School, Art Deco, or eclectic interior, on the kitchen wall or in the hall. The green and cream-yellow complement white, oak wood, and tile work.
Shipping:
Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, for fragile objects a double box. Always insured shipping with Track and Trace. See the feedback from previous buyers.
Attribution and sources:
Holland Handelsmerk, based on a visual comparison with the same model in the collectors’ catalog LastDodo, where the plate is listed as unmarked. Holland Handelsmerk is a trademark and not a factory. Under this brand around 1915 porcelain also appeared, produced by Gutherz in Altrohlau. A factory or designer is not claimed.
