Description from the seller
A beautiful bronze vidé-poche named "Somme" by the Belgian artist Joseph Zomers from around 1920. This directly references the commemoration of the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
The artwork commemorates the fierce fighting of the First World War. It portrays the powerful profile of a soldier wearing a combat helmet (the well-known Brodie helmet) surrounded by dynamic, undulating forms that evoke mud, smoke, or the wind on the battlefield.
Joseph Zomers was born in 1895 in Liège and died in 1928. He studied in Maredsous and produced several memorial works in the aftermath of the Great War.
Signed J. Zomers.
Length: 18.5 cm.
Width: 12.0 cm.
Weight: 429.0 grams.
After decades of careful collecting I have decided to part with (a portion of) my collection. I wish these special objects a place with a new enthusiast who understands the value of historical preservation. It is time these pieces receive the attention they deserve, so they will be preserved for the long term.
I will ensure extremely careful packaging and insured shipping.
