Antique travel trunk with a dome top from the United Kingdom, circa 1880–1900, in wood with iron fittings, in Victorian style, dimensions about 81 × 48 × 67 cm and weight around 18 kg, in good used condition with minor patina.
Description from the seller
Antique travel trunk with dome top – hand-painted monogram & freight number – ca. 1880/1900
---
Description:
What you see is a distinctive, authentic overseas and travel trunk from the late 19th century (Historicism / Gründerzeit) from England. The model stands out for its pronounced curved lid ("Dome Top / Barrel Top"), which at the time prevented heavy luggage from being stacked on the chest.
Particularly appealing is the historic patina with hand-painted yellow stencil inscriptions on the lid: the monogram "S. S." (initials of the traveler at the time) and the registry/freight number "3029".
Construction & Details:
- Korpus (Body): Sturdy wooden body, exterior clad with original durable fabric (Oilcloth/Canvas).
- Hinges/Hardware: Fully reinforced with riveted iron and wooden slats, including original corner protectors, two heavy lock plates (no key) and side folding iron handles.
- Interior: Original blue-yellow striped wallpaper in the dome lid with a historical factory fragment ("...ER"); the lower case is lined with a clean protective cloth.
Measurements & Weight:
- Width: approx. 81 cm
- Depth: approx. 48 cm
- Height: approx. 67 cm (highest point of the dome lid)
- Interior height of the case: approx. 42 cm
- Weight: approx. 18.4 kg
Condition:
Age-appropriate, honest original condition with a beautiful patina and historical wear, as one would expect from a genuine travel item of this era. Structurally solid and odor-neutral. Please regard the detailed photos as an integral part of the condition description.
A wonderful one-off piece – perfect as a decorative coffee table, laundry chest, or a stylish focal point in both modern and classic living environments.
